Unlike Radio, Pandora Targets In-Home Listeners...

(Weekend Edition)

While radio mostly programs for listeners out-of-home, Pandora values in-home radio listening. After announcing their new deal with Google TV, the music service couldn't contain their delight with the deal: "We're excited about what the Google TV platform means for the future of the Consumer Electronics device industry and for the last few months we've been working together with the Google TV team to deliver a Pandora experience that was built to take full advantage of the TV experience." Also contained in a recent Pandora Radio Blog was this note: "More than 30% of all radio listening takes place in the home so it is an important place for Pandora to be." To be sure, there's a great variety of ways to listen to Pandora including mobile: "You probably know that we've embraced mobile in a big way. What you may not know is that we didn't stop there. Over the course of the last year we've been expanding our presence in living rooms by integrating with a variety of televisions." ...

Most of terrestrial radio listening is out-of-home. Listeners are either at-work or in-car. Satellite radio's strength is in-car. Internet radio specializes in computer usage - all three radio platforms have a mobile presence - some more than others, but they continue to court and grow mobile radio. What sets Pandora apart is their attempt to grow at-home listening as evidenced by their new deal with Google TV...

And oh, by the way, Pandora founder Tim Westergren revealed a new subscriber count on Monday which gives the company 65 million listeners. That's up 5 million since July. Out of the 65 million, Westergren said 25 million were active users within the last month.
