20 Million Subscribers Can't Be Wrong...

What do terrestrial, internet and satellite radio have in common? All will survive in our lifetime. With substantial listener bases established for all three media sources, they may face adversity along the way and grow at different rates, but all will survive. Satellite radio's main representative, Sirius XM expects to see its combined subscriber base grow 6.9% to 20.1 million at the end of 2010, according to CEO Mel Karmazin. Karmazin says he has 19.5 million listeners now. With his two resident wackos, named Opie & Anthony signed to a new two-year deal and with hope that Howard Stern and the NFL re-up, competition from internet radio and your usual MP3 players and iPods is a bit easier to take for the Mel-Man...

Karmazin has announced that Sirius XM 2.0 will be launched in the near future. Plans call for a number of new initiatives to expand satellite radio's reach and appeal. They include traffic updates, weather, flight conditions, movie listings and gas price comparisons. Much of the new data is targeted to Sirius XM's bread-and-butter - automotive subscribers. The satcom company adds about 85% of its new subscriptions through factory-installed satellite radio sets in new cars. About 60% of all new cars sold in the U.S. are equipped with satellite radio. In the home audio market, Karmazin says about 15% of 110 million U.S. households have a satellite radio subscription...

With Sirius XM's continuing growth, the great majority of the 200+ million terrestrial radio audience and Pandora's phenomenal growth reaching legendary proportions - terrestrial, satellite and internet might be common enemies but they're also common survivors...

Commentary...He introduced television shows and narrated hundreds, if not thousands of movie trailers and did as much to promote Hollywood as the famous Hollywood sign, from the '40s through the 60s. Art Gilmore, died September 25 at the age of 98 from natural causes. One of Gilmore's most famous voice-overs was done for "Highway Patrol." Art Gilmore and his wife Grace, were married 72 years.
