A new survey of buyers says there's been a "relapse" in confidence about the economic recovery yet the study by STRATA reports that there's no barrier to digital buys. For the first time since their digital surveys started, the majority of agencies are saying they see no obstacle to increasing digital spending. In the previous survey, they said lack of advertiser demand was the largest obstacle. More than 80% of agencies said in the Q3 survey that they are focusing more on digital this year than last year - up 17% from the Q1 survey...
Agencies are most likely to use Google and Yahoo (81%) when they buy digital but radio, print and TV sites are getting business too. In dollars, search engines get 79.4% of online ad spending, while social media brings in 65.1% and news websites are third at 36.5%. Within social media, Facebook alone brings in 87.9% of dollars spent. The Q3 survey also found that ad agencies are not optimistic about the economy in the short term. Thirty-three percent of those polled don't anticipate strong growth for the economy or their own businesses until at least the middle of 2011 and 47% see clients keeping the same budgets as last year...
A new Borrell Associates study "gauges mobile-proximity-based advertising at $200 million this year, swelling to $760 million in 2011 and springing to $6 billion by 2015. Almost 97% of the expenditures, however, is likely to be placed by national chains, not by smaller local businesses. An interesting phenomenon is that one-third of smartphone users who access retail information on their devices are generally unreachable by any other medium - newspapers, yellow pages, radio or TV. With more and more people staring into small screens as they shop, could this foretell that mobile devices might be the most powerful way to influence wallet-ready consumers?"...
