We've all seen how TiVo, the granddaddy of DVR's, revolutionized TV in 1999. What followed was an avalanche of copycat digital video recorders that hasn't stopped yet. Can the pause, replay, fast forward control of live radio be just as successful? You can be sure that Pulsar will settle for just half of the success accomplished by TiVo and other DVR manufacturers. Pulsar has designed a new update for its XM and SIRIUS desktop clientele. Along with some interface improvements, the 2.0 update gives Pulsar the ability to pause, replay or fast forward live radio. Pulsar, which runs on Mac OS X 10.5 or higher, lets XM and SIRIUS customers tune in to their favorite channels without having to deal with cumbersome Web browser interfaces...
The Pulsar interface of the $20 app gives you station listings information on what's currently playing, and station artwork. You can also save your favorite channels. With the version 2 update, you can pause live radio stations and then go back to where you left off. You can also use a new Next Song command to skip songs you don't like (sure to be a popular choice), or jump backwards to catch something you might have missed. You can re-sort your Favorites list and see the title of the song that's playing, which should be mandatory in all radios...
While PCWorld is calling the new Pulsar device "an elegant satellite radio experience", I'm not so sure that radio consumers want a TiVo for radio, elegant or not. Pulsar hopes it catches on with SIRIUS XM so they can revolutionize radio like TiVo did with TV...
