Anti-Hate Groups Ask FCC To Move On Their Petition...

According to an editorial in the Washington Examiner, the National Hispanic Media Coalition has asked the FCC to move on the coalition's official petition in 2009 that asked the agency to open an official investigation into the "extent and effects of hate speech in the media, including the likely link between hate speech and hate crimes and to explore non-regulatory ways to counteract its negative impacts." In addition to the NHMC, Common Cause, The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies and The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute have signed off on the petition. The anti-hate coalition justified its 2009 petition by stating that "Hate speech against vulnerable groups is pervasive in our media and is not limited to a few isolated instances or any one media platform. Indeed, many large mainstream media corporations regularly air hate speech, and it is prolific on the Internet."...

The coalition is reiterating its call to the FCC one year later because "Over the past year, hate, extremism and misinformation have been on the rise." The coalition is using the latest Southern Poverty Law Center warning of a 54% increase "in the number of hate groups." According to the Washington Examiner, the SPLC is prone to issue similar warnings with some regularity inferring that they cannot be taken seriously...

Is this petition justified? Is there hatred in the media? In my opinion, the answers are no and yes. Is depicting whoever our president might be, Hitler, justified? Whether you agree with the 1st amendment or not, as long as it remains the law of the land, anything short of a criminal act is permitted. If you're waiting for a repeal of the amendment, you'll be waiting a long time - forever...
