(July 4th Edition - June 30 - July 7)
A 3-country study conducted in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. shows that smartphone users want FM radio on their devices. A new Vision Critical survey, conducted June 16 and 17 following the revelation that iPhone 4 does not include an FM tuner, showed that 30% of U.S. respondents picked an FM tuner as a feature they'd like to see. In Canada 35% want radio while the U.K. share was 30%. The poll used respondents that owned smartphones and those who expect to get a smartphone in the next 6 months. They chose an FM tuner as one of the features they'd most like to see in an Apple iPhone. So why do more Canadians want FM radio than U.S. respondents? Jeff Vidler, SVP/Managing Director of Vision Critical offers a theory...
Vidler believes that Canadian respondents may have been more enthusiastic about FM because mobile data charges are higher in Canada, so a non-streaming station may be a more appealing option. "But it may also be that local FM radio itself remains more attractive to smartphone users in Canada than in the U.S. and the U.K. where music streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify have taken the spotlight for smartphone users." ...
U.S. Terrestrial radio should not worry about Canada's edge in the study - that's meaningless - but should realize instead that radio is batting .300 which puts you among the top hitters in the league in baseball. Go with that...
