It's The Music That Drives Online & Mobile Listening...

For those who believe that music is dead, put the black clothes back in the closet. There will not be a funeral today. Naysayers have been trying to bury the music of today by failing to see that the old methods of exposing and selling music moved to a new address. YouTube, iTunes, Online and now Mobile fuel the exposure and sales of music today. The latter two sources are forecast to rise 15% in 2010 to 8.3 billion hours, compared to only a 9% increase in 2009. AccuStream Research supplies the forecast along with the news that total listening hours are forecast to expand 22% in 2011. Ad supported listening hours are forecast to improve 20% this year but as inventory sellout rates continue to increase, royalty rates are reset and mobile platforms achieve greater scale...
The Online and Mobile Music Spins and Media Spend: 2010 - 2012 report notes that audio and video ad sales make up about 50% of total media spend made against Internet radio, generating market value of $168 - $190 million in '09 including all paid placement, from banners to rich media executions. Sellout is forecast to reach 55% and generate $135 million in 2010 (audio and video media buys alone), a 41.6% growth spike; the market grew by 13.9% in 2009. So what's in it for terrestrial radio? AccuStream says that this year's estimates acknowledge much greater emphasis being made by terrestrial broadcasters with online extensions to implement a highly localized sales strategy...
The music listening curve has now reached mobile radio. You can look for the mobile music media spend to grow from the $6.7 million forecast for 2010 along with an increase in listening hours. Mobile provides out-of-home listening and together with the Internet, provides the whole package. And then there's satellite. Terrestrial radio has to work that much harder to compete...
