Ad Growth For Terrestrial Radio - No Growth For HD...

The headlines give terrestrial radio at least some temporary hope in its fight for survival: PWC: Radio Returns To Growth In 2010, Radio Reach Remains 239 Million, MediaGuide: Big Gains In Auto Spots, etc. etc...All good things for terrestrial radio in 2010. The forecast for HD Radio isn't quite as encouraging. It's actually pretty lousy, according to Pricewaterhouse Coopers. In its observation on the industry PWC says that HD Radio "does not offer much content beyond standard radio" and that "niche channels" will become more widely available over the next few years. The report says, "While we do not expect HD Radio to match the offerings of satellite, it will become a competitor to satellite radio." PWC cites some factors "hampering growth" for HD: "The prices of the receivers must come down. There must be a significant number of niche channels not available on tradition radio and HD Radio must become a more common feature of new cars. Until those impediments have been surmounted, we do not expect HD Radio to have a major impact on the radio industry." In other words - back to the drawing board, HD Radio...
And how will HD Radio's "competition" fare? PWC says satellite radio ad spending is projected to rise to $110 million by 2014, up from $61 million in 2009. That's a 12.5% compound annual increase. Satellite subscription spending is expected to expand to $4.1 billion in 2014, up from $2.5 billion in 2009, a 10% compound annual increase. Terrestrial radio which according to RADAR ratings has 239 million listeners, is returning to growth in 2010, driven by political ads and a rebound in car advertising in the U.S. PWC predicts that terrestrial radio advertising will rise at 3.5% compound annual growth through 2014, reaching $18.5 billion. PWC projects a 4.6% annual growth rate for the total radio market - terrestrial and satellite. They look for a bump to $21 billion in 2014 from $16.8 billion in 2009. Online advertising will gain 10.7% to $568 million in 2014 from $342 million in 2009...
To sum up: Terrestrial, Satellite & Internet aren't going anywhere but up. HD Radio?: cue the vuvuzelas...
