NAB's Gordon Smith Explains His Opposition To PRA...

National Association of Broadcasters CEO Gordon Smith never met an interview he didn't do. When he tried to explain his views on various broadcasting issues, he was asked by USA Today why he wants cable operators to pay TV stations for their content yet opposes the Performance Rights Act which would require radio stations that play music to pay musicians and record companies, he answered with this: "The difference is that the performance rights people don't want to pay us for the promotional value we give them. For 80 years, radios received (music) play and performers received promotion. Those have been offsetting economic values. Radio continues to be the very best advertising music performers have. No one who ever grabbed a Grammy got there without radio." ...

Having just started his job in September, the jury is still out on whether or not Gordon Smith will be successful as radio's biggest lobbyist in Washington. Don't look for Smith to be a fixture as NAB CEO. Remember where he came from. The Oregon Republican lost his bid for a third term in the U.S. Senate in 2008 before being named to head the NAB. Don't be too surprised if he runs for office again...

Whatever the length of his term at the NAB, Smith should be the right person for the job. With what seems like an endless amount of issues facing broadcasters, someone who can work the room is desperately needed. Thousands of radio and television broadcasters are counting on his success...
