The following static...brought to you by...

Well whether it's static or silence, millions of Internet radio listeners will get the silent treatment as the thousands upon thousands of webcasters observe a national day of silence in protest to the recent raise in music royalty rates being imposed on them by the Copyright Royalty Board. Starting July 15th, 17 months worth of retroactive royalty rates, at the new 300% increase rate, are due unless Congress intervenes with new, pending legislation...

Kurt Hanson, editor of the Radio and Internet Newsletter (RAIN) and the SaveNetRadio coalition are the key instigators in this day of silence, fearing that the new rates will simply put many webcasters silent, for good. The protest is wide-spread with even the big boys in on it, like Yahoo!, Pandora, AccuRadio, Live365stations, MTV Online and Rhapsody...

For more information about Day of Silence events and how you can help, contact jake@savenetradio.org or visit: http://www.savenetradio.org/ or http://www.kurthanson.com/dos . If I were a webcaster, I would also go the route of silence only I would make a loop of Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" and play it all day. That would make anyone crazy enough to protest anything: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZGWQauQOAQ ...
