TV gains while Radio drags its heels with use of the Internet...

A couple of items caught my eye that show that TV is being more aggressive than radio in using the Internet to their advantage. While audiences for both industries show a steady decline, TV has been jumping on the Internet bandwagon while radio has been passive. Just yesterday CBS and NBC made deals with the Web that indicate that they get it...

CBS invested in Ticket Reserve Inc. to offer viewers links to a Web site where sports fans can buy hard-to-get game tickets. With StubHub's success, this makes perfect sense. I've recently used StubHub to get hard-to-get concert tickets. Did I pay more to get those tickets? Yes. But did I get tickets that I wouldn't have been able to purchase elsewhere? You bet and without leaving my computer. The NBC deal will post clips from shows like "Dateline" on personal Web sites to take advantage of the marketing power of YouTube and the like. Two savvy moves by TV...

Item #2: Audio Graphics out of Chagrin Falls (OH) released the Borrell Associates "What Local Web Sites Earn: 2007 Survey" which shows that local online advertising is expected to hit $7.5 billion this year, a 31% increase over 2006. The radio industry will be netting 2.2% of local Internet ads spent, up from 1% in 2006. No figures given for TV but my guess is that their figure is substantially higher. Borrell only measures radio. I'm not familiar with Borrell so I can't vouch for their accuracy but here's a quote from Audio Graphics that places things re: TV vs. Radio in its proper perspective: "That radio has let itself slide to such a low percentage of local online advertising revenue only shows the industry's complete lack of understanding in what is of interest to local merchants"...

It's time for radio to wake up...

Congratulations: to the Anaheim Ducks who become the 1st west coast team to ever win the Stanley Cup...To Trevor Hoffman of San Diego for becoming the 1st big leaguer to reach 500 saves. The 39-year old Hoffman pitched a scoreless 9th last night for his 18th save in 20 chances this season. Hoffman passed Lee Smith's old mark last season with his 479th save. You will never see any current active reliever catch Hoffman or even reach 500. Mariano Rivera has 413 saves and is the only active reliever close to Hoffman. He's also 39 this fall...
