The Rolling Stones make their U.S. debut...

It was on this date in 1964 that The Rolling Stones opened their first U.S. tour at the Manning Bowl in Lynn, Massachusetts. Lyndon Johnson was our President, the cost of a new home was $20,500, milk was less than a buck, at the pumps you could fill it up for 30 cents a gallon. The highest rated TV shows:

1) Bonanza

2) Bewitched

3) Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.

4) The Andy Griffith Show

5) The Fugitive

If you were dancing you were doing The Dog, Swim, Frug, Watusi or Monkey (or all at once)...

1964 saw these "firsts":

The Mustang, Kennedy half-dollar, Pop-Tarts, Zip codes and Lucky Charms...

Commentary...

Is NBC on to something ? On the heels of presenting The Eagles last night in prime time (in a concert taped in Australia), the Peacock Network tonight debuts "Hit Me Baby One More Time" at 9 (EDT). The first of 3 summer episodes will feature 5 different acts of usta-be's (Loverboy, A Flock of Seagulls, Arrested Development, Tiffany and Cece Peniston). All will be competing against each other for cash prizes, to go to a charity of the winner's choice...Future shows will feature Wang Chung, The Knack, Irene Cara, Sophie B. Hawkins, Cameo and Tommy Tutone...

We salute NBC for not testing us any further on our tolerance of reality shows and for finally competing with VHI, MTV and E by presenting programming for a lower (but key) demographic. By programming music by 80s acts in this series they will capture at least a portion of that audience...
