His number's up...

It was a day that even the skies wept. 49,641 sat in the damp discomfort of an unseasonably raw and unpleasant June day. The Yankee Stadium crowd swallowed hard in unison as "Auld Lang Syne" brought the great Bambino, Babe Ruth to the microphone at home plate. There in sincere and simple words the greatest player to play the game of baseball bid his fans goodbye. The Sultan of Swat was not only tired, he was dying. Throat cancer would claim The Babe just two months later.

Babe Ruth's number 3 uniform was retired for good that day, becoming the first uniform to be retired in professional sports. It happened on this date in 1948...

Afleet Alex proved to be the best 3-year old thoroughbred in the country by winning 2 legs of racing's triple crown. In 12 races Alex has won 8 and finished in the money in 11. Also finishing in the money on Saturday was "Alex's Lemonade Stand" which collected some $30,000 at Belmont. All for children's cancer. Little Alex Scott was looking down at the results with a big smile on her face...
