National Spot Radio Off Slowly After A Strong Finish...

After announcing that national radio business finished up 17.7% in 2010, Katz Radio Group President Mark Gray says January is off to a "soft" start. First the good news. The national spot radio market bounced back with a very strong year in 2010. Gray says "Following an exceptionally weak 2009 that was hurt by the recession, the advertising recovery took hold with strong category gains across all regions of the country. National Spot Radio ended 2010 up 17.7% from a year earler, as sales were lifted by robust demand across auto, telecomm, retail, consumer products, entertainment and an extremely active political season in the run-up to November's elections", according to Radio Ink...

Katz says national billings were down last month compared to one year ago but there's apparently no reason for panic. Inside Radio reminds us that the start of the year is never a big time for advertisers, and a succession of winter storms has slowed the overall economy and has impacted radio too...

The biggest supporters of national radio in 2010, per category might give radio some clues as to who to pitch locally. While the big ad houses control national accounts, there is always local business to be had with similar advertisers. In Automotive, the top 3: O'Reilly Auto Parts & Honda. In Consumer Products: Pfizer, Panera Bread & Epson America. In Retail: Safeway Stores, Wal*Mart & Super Valu. And in Finance: Geico, United Services Auto Association & American Family Insurance. There's business out there locally, if you look hard enough...
