BIA/Kelsey Starts A Social Media Service...

Social media's influence on local radio sales has become important enough for one of the leading research and advisory firms to launch a social media practice. BIA/Kelsey is launching Social Local Media (SLM), "a new advisory service dedicated to covering the growing and dynamic social media ecosystem and the best opportunities for driving revenues with social platforms," according to TV News Check. Recent research by the firm, in partnership with ConStat, shows 48% of small and medium-sized businesses use Facebook to advertise or promote their business, edging out email at 43%. One-quarter use other social networks, 22% have a blog, and 19% use Twitter to promote their company, according to Media Post...

A separate study last week from Merchant Circle estimated the proportion of small businesses using Facebook even higher - at 70% - up from 50% a year ago and topping the two-thirds that use Google search advertising. Facebook clearly has become the place for radio to advertise socially, with Google and Twitter as alternatives...

BIA/Kelsey may be the first but won't be the last to school radio in social media. It's all about growing local revenue from social media sources. BIA/Kelsey says "SLM was created to address the rapidly developing social segment." The firm estimates that social media will be a $23 billion digital advertising market in 2011. Radio stations not tapping into that revenue source will be left behind those smart enough to take advantage of the fastest growing segment of the advertising universe...
