Weak October Retail Sales Will Likely Affect Radio...

(Weekend Edition)

While CBS says they are "benefiting greatly from a return of advertising to historical levels" according to CEO Les Moonves, that growth might be stunted in the final quarter after a lackluster October at retail. Moonves, was crowing about a 9% increase in revenue last quarter but will that growth continue? 247wallst.com reports October retail sales as weak overall with some bright spots. Sales increases in October were originally slated at 2.2% but that number was later lowered to 1.7%. According to Retail Metrics, overall growth was just 1.5%...

The bright spots include teen clothing store Zumiez Inc. (+21.5%), Costco (+6%), Macy's (+2.5%), Limited Brands Inc. (+9%) and BJ's Wholesale Club (+2.2%). More modest gains were made by Target Corp. (+1.7%), Gap Inc. (+2%) and teen clothier Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (+2%). October sales generally depend on promotions and, with winter gear on the retailers shelves, warm fall weather can push sales down too...

247wallst.com reports that good October sales will translate into good holiday season sales, but high unemployment and an overall weak economy don't point in that direction. Still more proof that the economy is not yet out of the woods...
