Radio is facing a new world and trying to figure out how to fit into it. It's a world of mobile devices and social networking. As the medium continues becoming more socially involved, Gowalla Communications Manager Pia Arthur offers this advice: "There are currently several things radio stations can do to become active on Gowalla", a popular location-based gamemaker. "Radio stations can create trips for certain events, and they can do giveaways for check-ins to their events and concerts. Through comments, stations can also receive feedback from listeners about events they are hosting." That's one way to get the attention of the Facebook generation. "The goal is to give listeners a great experience while sponsors and broadcasters benefit from more personalized engagement with the audiences they want to reach" says Moblico's Pierre Barbeau, CEO of the mobile solutions company...
While location-based gaming might sound like all fun and games, Alice Radio in San Francisco recently teamed up with Gowalla to raise money for Haiti and even VH1, Bravo and The History Channel have signed on for location-based social games, according to RadioWorld. Barbeau adds "By linking radio to location-based social media games, we turn radio into a '3D experience' that expands reach for everyone. In the end, this drives revenues to new levels." ...
This might all sound designed for the lower end of the demographic scale, but if Bravo and The History Channel are involved, maybe it's worth looking into. In addition to Gowalla, other popular location-based gamemakers include Foursquare, Brightkite and SCVNGR...
