New Research Puts A Damper On FM Radio Chips...

While NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith and his RAB counterpart Jeff Haley teamed up to hype the inclusion of FM chips in mobile phones at the Radio Show yesterday, new research indicates that maybe it's not such a great idea anyway. ComScore's new MobiLens study shows only 22.8% of the 234 million Americans own a smartphone and could access the web. Of the 53.4 million smartphone subscribers, only 23.8% own an iPhone. In other words, only 5.4% of everyone who has a cellphone use an iPhone. The study says that's important because iPhone owners listen to considerably more music than owners of competing cellphones. An additional 17% own a Google Android mobile. This means fewer than 21.8 million people have a wide selection of apps including the most popular radio apps. Now, here's the big question - would more people listen to radio if it was more readily available in a smartphone equipped with an FM chip???

Nielsen's Netview recently found that smartphone users spend less than 2 minutes an hour listening to music on their phones. It should be noted that Nielsen did not break out radio separately. Ready for another surprise? ComScore shows that there's an even bigger problem than the less than 2 minutes spent listening - most subscribers never listen to music on their phone. I mean, has the NAB or RAB seen this study? And if they did would they still push for FM chips? That doesn't even require an answer - of course they would...

There's even more to suggest that FM chips in smartphones may not be necessary - the least used activity is listening to music. Only 14.5% of mobile subscribers have listened to music on their phone in the past month. Mobile users might claim they want an FM chip, but their actions suggest that most won't use the radio and they probably won't spend much time listening. Arbitron tells us that nearly 200 million people listen to radio in the top 300 radio markets alone. Of that 200 million listener base, fewer than 34 million U.S. subscribers listen to music on their phones. Unless radio figures out a way to use 2 minutes of listening as a viable demographic to sell product from, is it worth it???
