Baseball playoffs in the major metros...

Using Arbitron's spring 2007 market rankings and including today's one-game playoff in Denver, here's where the baseball playoff cities rank:
  • Number 17 San Diego plays Number 22 (Denver) Colorado tonight to represent the NL wild card team...
  • The winner of that game will play number 7, Philadelphia in a best-of-five playoff series...
  • The number 3 Chicago Cubs take on number 15 (Phoenix) Arizona, same format...
  • In the American League, number 2 Los Angeles plays number 11 Boston...
  • Number 1 New York (Yankees) plays number 26 (the only team not representing the top 25 but barely) Cleveland...

Of 8 teams in the baseball playoffs, 7 represent top 25 markets with 3 top 5 markets and 4 in the top 10, this does not include surrounding suburban areas nor does it include radio network, satellite (XM) or network TV reach...

Of course, New York could have had 2 teams representing the number one market but we won't get into that. The playoffs should be great with massive numbers of listeners and viewers for the coverage starting tonight and leading to the World Series on October 24...
