The New York Times is shrinking...

The Gray Lady, following the lead of other famous newspapers like the Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, is getting smaller. The Times shrunk its pages by an inch and a half yesterday. I haven't seen the new leaner edition of the storied newspaper but I would bet the print still comes off on your fingers like no other paper can. Now that they've made the Times smaller, how about using ink that doesn't tattoo your fingers???

One thing not reduced in the newly-trimmed Times are their ad rates which will not make advertisers warm all over about the new design. Reduce your rates and they'll love it to death. There will be however, "somewhat fewer words per page" according to a Times spokesman and in keeping with this new fangled Internet era, will spill over news content to its Web site. On the editorial page, the Times has cut the space allotted for letters by about a third but again will spill over additional letters online...

Not everyone will find the new Times a better read. Newspaper consultant John Morton feels that the smaller paper "just diminishes the appearance of the newspaper." Morton adds "In the pursuit of saving money, there are some things they shouldn't do and this is one of them." I wonder what he'll say when he sees the new tabloid edition of The Wall Street Journal...
