Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler ruled out manslaughter as a possible verdict in the Phil Spector murder trial yesterday. He instructed the jury not to consider any possible lesser decision than second-degree murder. If convicted, Spector will face a sentence of 15 years to life with a possible addition of 10 years for use of a firearm. If acquitted, Spector walks...
Spector's new lawyer Dennis Riordan says "We're asking the court to roll the dice for us." Riordan recently replaced the departing Bruce Cutler who dreamed of the good old days when he would just have to defend John Gotti, a piece of tiramisu compared to the 'Wall of Sound' maestro. It seems that this trial which started in April (2007) has dragged on forever but the end is near...
Alan Jackson is handling the prosecution's closing arguments while Patrick Dixon handles the rebuttal argument for Spector. Linda Kenney Baden will take care of the science portion of the defense's case. The arguments should last about 2 days before the jury gets the judge's instructions, followed by deliberation by the panel. What makes this case seem much longer than the 4 months it took is the actual death of Lana Clarkson which occurred on February 3, 2003. The decision is sure to be followed by some vicious bargaining by the networks for an exclusive interview with Phil Spector and another spectacle. Meanwhile let's not forget that a person lost her life in this case. It's something that got lost somewhere on the way to a verdict...
