He'll Be Back...
So hypocrisy wins out in the I-mess. Don Imus said the wrong thing at the worst possible time with his derogatory remarks about the Rutgers women's basketball team and he paid dearly for it, losing his job. As a result, we may be seeing the beginning of a movement of 'shock jocks' migrating to pay-radio which is currently available on satellite, pod broadcasting and who knows what, in the near future. Much to Howard Stern's chagrin, the I-man may wind up working in a studio near him, in the same building, before long. Why not? Imus is the hottest property in radio now with all the exposure he's received. Imuses week of Friday the 13ths will ultimately pay off for him and let's not forget that one of his biggest fans, Mel Karmazin is running the show at Sirius Satellite...
Does satellite radio now become cable TV for those who can express themselves without being censored? It could happen. At least for the major market talkers. The losers in all this will be those who refuse to pay to listen to radio. Can I have a show of hands? For the record, my hand is raised. You want to see "The Sopranos" or your favorite team on cable - you pay for it. You choose to listen to Howard Stern or someone else who only appears on satellite - you pay for it. If you choose not to, you don't. Plain and simple. That's the real world. Live with it...
Imus before being shown the door by first MSNBC and then CBS Radio, raised $1.6 million in his radiothon to help children with cancer and for sudden infant death syndrome. He also met with the Rutgers team for a few hours last night. Rest assured the I-man will return before long at a satellite station near you...

Jackie Robinson Day...
60 years to the day that Jackie Robinson broke the major league color barrier to become baseball's first black player, Major League Baseball will honor Jackie at all 15 ballparks where games are to be played. Dozens of players will wear No. 42 but the big ceremony will be in Los Angeles where every member of the Dodgers will wear the Hall of Famer's retired number. "Leading off for the Dodgers, #42...", Batting second for the Dodgers, #42". Obviously if the Dodgers win, the hero of the game will be....okay, everyone: NUMBER 42! It is a great thing though. That uniform number #42 was retired on this date in 1997. When Jackie debuted at Ebbets Field on April 15, 1947, 25,623 were there to view history being made. Jackie went hitless in 3 at-bats and played 1st base against the Boston Braves. Jackie was still alive when he was inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1962 but 10 years later, severe heart problems ended his life on October 24, 1972. Celtic's great Bill Russell was called by Jackie's wife Rachel to be a pall-bearer for Jackie's funeral. When he asked Rachel why he was called, she said: "you were his favorite athlete." Bill replied "how did I get to be Jackie Robinson's favorite? He was a hero to all of us." "Whenever I hear his name now, I'm very touched by that" Russell added...
