A World Series trend continues...

Right now you're wondering what that trend is but if you think it's low ratings, well you would be wrong. Although this World Series between the Cardinals and Tigers is headed for the lowest ratings since ratings have been taken, that's not the trend. With St. Louis one win away from wrapping up the championship, whether they or Detroit wins - the trend will continue. This year's winning team will join (in chronological order) the Yankees, Arizona, Anaheim, Florida, Boston and the Chicago White Sox. Correctamundo ! They will become the 7th different team in this decade and/or century to win the fall classic. The trend started with the Yankee three-peat in 2000 and since then - parity, on a scale that no other professional sports league has seen besides baseball. It throws George Steinbrenner's theory of outspending everyone but Congress in order to win a championship right out his pinstriped window...

No less than 5 World Championships have been decided on this same October 27th date going back to 1985. That year the Kansas City Royals became the 6th team to win the World Series after trailing 3 games to 1 when they beat the Cardinals (thank you Don Denkinger). The same date in 1986 saw the Mets win their 2nd World Series. On October 27th, 1991 the Minnesota Twins beat the Atlanta Braves in Game 7 in one of the most thrilling fall classics of all-time with 5 of the 7 games decided by 1 run - 4 in the last at-bat. On October 27th,1999 the New York Yankees beat the Braves for their second consecutive title and 3rd in 4 years and under the moons reddish tint caused by a lunar eclipse on October 27th, 2004 the Boston Red Sox exorcised 86 years of agonizing losses by winning their 1st World Series in modern history over the St. Louis Cardinals...

In my blog earlier this week about the Bill Buckner play in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series I mentioned redemption being on its way for the Red Sox. That redemption is summed up in a terrific video highlighting the history of the Red Sox frustration and victory after long-last and to the tune of "Sweet Caroline" - no less. Click on and enjoy:
