Modest Gains Forecast For Radio In 2011...

This probably wont come as shocking news to the radio station owners that find themselves barely surviving but signs are now pointing to a not-so-hot year for radio revenue. BIA/Kelsey is now predicting modest revenue gains in 2011. They predict a small increase in radio revenue for the current calendar year. After growth of 5.4% in 2010, BIA/Kelsey is forecasting growth of 3.7% for radio in 2011. According to Radio Ink, "the minuscule jump of less than 4% goes against the grain of every bit of anecdotal evidence coming in from radio stations around the country." BIA/Kelsey is predicting a 4.5% growth in 2012, thanks to political advertising. Modest gains are also forecast for radio from 2013 through 2015...

In addition to revenue predictions for radio in the coming years, a new U.S. Ad Spending report from eMarketer shows radio getting 9.9% of the ad spend pie for 2015, which ranks just above magazines (6.7%), outdoor (4.4%) and various directories (2.9%). According to Adweek, TV will get the lion's share of ad spend in 2015 - 39.2%, followed by internet (25.6%) and the rest. Radio ranks 4th in ad spend among both new and old media...

Both the BIA/Kelsey and eMarketer forecasts are just that and from what I've learned from doing research is not to look at just one report but instead to look for developing trends. So far the trends are showing slow growth for radio in the years ahead...
