"I saw rock and roll's future and its name is Bruce Springsteen"-Jon Landau-May 9, 1974...
That is just part of the quote but you get the idea that Jon kinda, sorta liked the Boss when he saw him perform on this date in 1974 at the Harvard Square Theater in Cambridge. Jon was the influential music critic whose credits included writing for the Boston Phoenix, the Real Paper in Boston and the legendary Rolling Stone. His quote would become one of the more famous music quotes of all-time and helped propel Springsteen into his rightful ranking as a pop icon...
25-year old Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band was opening for Bonnie Raitt on that spring night in New England and he would move well past being popular with the college crowd in the Northeast after this performance and the Landau quote which gave Columbia Records impetus to now mount a major campaign to promote Springsteen...
In October of 1974 when Springsteen re-appeared in Boston at the Music Hall, Bruce agreed to hire Jon as a co-producer. Eventually Landau would become Springsteen's manager. More on Jon Landau in my commentary...

Commentary...
After we switched the format to top 40 at WRKO, Jon Landau, then writing for the Boston Phoenix wrote a series of articles on "AM Radio Wars" in which he compared us to WBZ but mostly to WMEX and offered his personal comments on his likes and dislikes. We got into a mini-war with Jon and swapped a few comments to each other which he printed in the Phoenix. I didn't know Jon well but he was always cordial when we would run into each other at various events. His quote on Bruce Springsteen was used to good advantage by Columbia Records and full-page ads were bought to support the promotional campaign that would launch the star that Springsteen would become...
