Clear Channel's Money Problems Grow...

Santa Claus found the blackest coal he could find and dumped it in Clear Channel's Christmas stocking this year. It's not like they weren't expecting it. On Christmas Eve, Clear Channel announced they were seeking a "diverse array of alternatives" for its balance sheet. Clear Channel's goal is to "optimize its overall capital structure." Translation: HELP! Clear Channel is drowning in a sea of about $18.8 billion in debt. That was at the end of the third quarter. The beleaguered radio company has options that you wouldn't wish on your best friend...

The first option is to buy some time from the lenders that are trying to get their money back from Clear Channel. Next would come more loans or a debt swap. The company would pay off some of their debt with whatever they can beg, borrow or steal from someone out there that has money to burn. While Clear Channel looks for an angel, things won't be getting any better as Q4 wraps...

So how did the largest owner of full-power AM, FM and shortwave radio stations, 12 radio channels on Sirius XM - the largest pure-play radio station owner and operator in the U.S. reach their current dismal state? A good place to start would be by asking Mark Mays, former CC president and CEO who wisely bailed out last summer...
